The beauty of love through angel wings.

For this sculpture I used soapstone. To start I drew sketches of what I wanted to sculpt. I created the same size model of the future sculpture using clay. I drew in the soapstone and used a hacksaw to cut the sculpture into a basic shape. To carve the stone I used the Dremel tool, I used 2 different types of pieces, the diamond wand to carve the shape and the sand wand to smooth the sculpture. To create the shape of the hands I use the metal tools from the wax sculpture. After emerging the sculpture into the water I could better see how it was doing and what need further work.
This sculpture required me to be outside, I used an old table and a fan to keep the dust from interfering with the sanding. I also used an eye protector that had a mouth protector. I keep a water bucket to dip the sculpture. As I finish with the shaping I use sandpaper 200, 400, 800 and 1200. I work my way until the sculpture was nice and smooth. I used warm olive oil to seal and wax my sculpture.
My piece was inspired by my daughter. She loves angels and I was very happy to create one for her. As I proceeded to shape my angel its wings and hands form a heart, what I had not previously intended. I was very pleased with the results. In my sketches I wanted the angel to have hair, but as a proceeded carving I could not reach a shape I like, so the angel ended up with no hair.
